Crackling Spinach Recipe: Easy and Tasty Snack

Crackling spinach is crunchy and crispy finely chopped deep fried spinach leaves with salt, sugar, chili flakes and sesame seeds.

This is a perfect evening snack with good nutritional values, without compromising the taste. This is a simple and easy recipe and using this you can serve the crunchy crackling spinach in less than half an hour.



  • You can also use garlic to enhance the taste but it is optional.
  • You can fry garlic and sesame seeds together but in this recipe we will use roasted sesame seeds without garlic.
  • If you don’t have a Chinese chopper to finely chop spinach, you can use a regular knife. But Chinese chopper will surely save some time.
  • You can use regular cooking oil to deep fry spinach leaves.
  • Wash the spinach leaves thoroughly in running water. They generally have a lot of dirt on them.
  • Make sure to make spinach leaves completely dry after washing them. There should be no water on the leaves otherwise they won’t be crispy and you will be disappointed.

Ingredients for Crackling Spinach:

  • 4 cups (2 bunches) of Spinach leaves (Palak ke patte)
  • Oil to fry spinach
  • Salt to taste
  • Sesame Seeds (til seeds)
  • 1 teaspoon of Sugar
  • Red chili flakes

Step by Step Crackling Spinach Recipe:

Finely Cutting the Spinach Leaves using Chinese chopper:

  • Take 2 bundles of spinach leaves and wash them thoroughly in running water.
  • Let them dry or use a clean towel to completely make them dry.
  • Cut their stems if any, we will use only leaves to make crackling spinach.
  • Put all dry spinach leaves one on another and make a stack or two to finely chop them.
  • Use a Chinese chopper to finely cut them. You can use a regular knife but Chinese chopper makes it very easy and quick to finely chop spinach leaves.

Roasting Sesame Seeds:

  • Now put a pan on stove and roast one tablespoon of sesame seeds on medium flame.
  • As the pan gets hotter, sesame seeds will start to pop up. As soon as they begin to become light red in color, take them out in a plate. Don’t leave them in the hot pan, they might get burnt.
  • Roasted sesame seeds are tastier than the raw ones.

Crushing Red Chili Flakes and Sugar:

Now, take one teaspoon of red chili flakes and one teaspoon of sugar and crush them together in a Mortar & Pestle (Imam Dasta). But don’t crush them too much.

Deep Frying Spinach Leaves:

Now take out your frying pan and put a lot of oil on high flame so that it will be enough to deep fry all the spinach leaves.

As the oil becomes hot enough, put all the chopped spinach leaves on the pan and deep fry them until they become crispy. Drain as much oil as you can from the spinach leaves and put them in a plate.


Take them out and put them on plate. While they are still hot, sprinkle salt to taste, sesame seeds and red chili flakes – sugar mixture on them.

Now toss it or use a spoon to mix gently so that salt, sesame seeds, red chili flakes and sugar get evenly distributed.


Congratulation, your crackling spinach is ready to be served.
