Brain fog is one of the most commonly used terms in the internet today. It has become an umbrella term that covers feelings forgetting things, a lack of focus, confusion and less mental clarity. Not to mention that brain fog is not a medically recognized term but a common term that sums up the above disorders. In this period of time having brain fog is very common but does not mean that it is normal.
It is a mental disorder, which can be minimized with many methods which I will mention later in the article. Whenever you feel that you just don’t have the power to think anymore. You feel confused, foggy, demotivated or unfocused, it is your mind’s way to tell you that there are troubles within yourself that need to be fixed and learn to live a better life.
There can be many causes of brain fog. We can broadly classify them in two different categories.
- Dull Lifestyle
- Side effect of medications or a medical illness.

Below are some most common causes of brain fog. They are either lifestyle related of side effects of any medication or a medical illness.
There is no argument that stress has become an integral part of most of the people’s lifestyle nowadays. People are falling in the trap of money making process without paying attention to healthy lifestyle. This is what making their life so miserable. Stress can cause mental fatigue. Chronic stress weakens your immune system, plays a key role to make you suffer from depression and increases your blood pressure. It takes away your mind’s energy and it becomes exhausted. It becomes harder to focus, think, and reason.
2. Lack of rest/sleep:
As Sadhguru mentions that proper rest is a requirement, sleep is not. Your body needs a good amount of time to rest or sleep. And how to improve the quality of sleep? The answer is to improve the quality of your life. If you are stressed out then even 10 hours sleep would be inadequate for you. Poor sleep interferes with how well your brain functions. If you are happy and joyful all the tome then quality of sleep significantly improves. After that even 6 or 7 hours would be sufficient for you.

Hormonal changes can also trigger brain fog. A drop in the level of estrogen hormone during menopause can cause poor focus, forgetfulness, less concentration and foggy thinking. Levels of the hormones progesterone and estrogen increase during pregnancy. Changes in levels of these hormones can also affect your memory and cause short-term cognitive impairment. Chronic fatigue syndrome, which involves persistent fatigue for longer than six months may lead to brain fog.
Poor eating habits may lead to brain fog. Eating healthy is not only important to fight brain fog but to maintain a good overall health. Vitamin B-12 is responsible to support healthy brain function. Deficiency of B-12 may become responsible for brain fog. Additionally, brain fog may occur after eating specific foods, If you suffer from any sort of food allergies or sensitivities, .
