How To Be Mentally Strong | Change Your Habits

People who are mentally strong, have good habits. They control their thoughts emotions and behaviors in healthy and good ways.

The key is, you need to keep your mind focused in present life that is happening around you. Without having your mind in the right place, you easily lose focus, leading to an endless path of critical judgment, over-thinking and over-analyzing all the time.


To be precise, your intelligence does not play that much role in being mentally strong and successful. Researches have shown that intelligence only accounts for 30% of your achievement that is even less than average.

So, What makes a bigger impact than intelligence? The answer is being totally present in the present moment and to be mentally strong.


Learn from the habits that mentally strong people have. Let’s see what you can carry out in your life to be mentally strong and tough:

1. Always Be Present:

A mentally strong person avoids wasting his/her time and mental energy in past failures or by predicting or fantasizing about the future. The work you do now decides your future. Mentally strong people invest majority of their energy in creating an ideal present. The key is to live in your present as you don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow.


Remember the only time we have is, now.

2. Don’t Waste Your Time Feeling Sorry for Yourself:

Nowhere To Go But Up

Mentally tough people take responsibility for their actions and consequences. They are able to emerge from the bad experiences. And they become better than the person they were before. They have a good understanding of the fact that life is not fair all the time. Mentally strong people don’t waste time on feeling sorry or regretting about their mistake. They learn from their mistakes instead of lamenting about it.

3. Don’t Compare To Become Mentally Strong:

Instead of comparing yourself with other person, why not simply compare yourself with your past and see how you have improved your life or what changes you have to make in order to lead a happy life like you used to live.

“Comparison is the death of joy.” –Mark Twain

If you want a proven path to being joyful and not feeling bad about yourself, then never compare yourself with others since “comparison ruins happiness”. Ambition is great, but mentally tough people don’t compare their day-to-day life with other’s life.

4. Learn From Your Mistakes:

A mentally strong person takes responsibility for past mistakes and behavior and is willing to learn from those mistakes. Research shows that the ability to be self-reflective in an exact and productive way is one of the greatest strengths of successful executives and entrepreneurs.

5. Keep Your Power to Yourself:

Such people don’t allow any negative emotion or person to over power them mentally. They don’t allow others to control their emotions. They don’t say things like, “My boss is horrible and makes me feel sad.” Rather they understand that they can control their own emotions and they have a choice in how they respond.

6. Don’t Waste Energy on Things You Can’t Control:

Accept the situations that are not in your control. Mentally strong people focus on what they can control in their lives. They know that sometimes the only thing they can control is their own response and attitude. Invest your energy in the things you can control then only you’ll be ready for whatever life throws at your way.

7. Stop Being A People Pleaser:

Mentally strong people recognize that they don’t need to please everyone around them, all the time. They’re not afraid to say no or speak up when they feel the necessity. They strive to be kind and fair, but can handle other people being upset if they didn’t make them happy.

Trying to make everyone in your life happy drains your mental strength and distracts you from reality.

8. Don’t Fear Taking Risks:

Take Calculated Risks

You can’t be mentally tough without taking chances, but a successful outcome depends on your ability to take fruitful risks. Mentally tough people don’t take reckless risks, but don’t mind taking calculated risks. They  spend some time calculating the risks and benefits before making a big decision, and they’re fully aware of the potential downsides that might happen.

9. Don’t Live In the Past:

Constantly judging your past choices or romanticizing about the good or bad past days pulls you back. It keeps you from both enjoying the present and taking the good decisions for future. Mentally strong people don’t waste time dwelling on the past and wishing things could be different.

They acknowledge their past and can say what they’ve learned from it.

10. Accept and Embrace The Change To Become Mentally Strong:

Mentally strong people don’t try to avoid change. Instead, they are always there to a welcome positive change with open arms and eyes. They are willing to be flexible.

The world is changing, and your success depends on your ability to adapt.

11. Don’t Make the Same Mistakes Over and Over Again:

They accept their faults and take the responsibility for their behavior and learn from their past mistakes. They move on and make better decisions in the future. As a result, they don’t keep repeating those mistakes again and again.

12. Don’t Resent Other People’s Success:

Mentally strong people can appreciate and celebrate other people’s success in life. They don’t feel jealous of someone surpasses them. Instead, they recognize that success comes with hard work, and they are willing to work hard for their own chance at success.

Join your co-worker if he bags a promotion. Share his happiness and celebrate genuinely.

13. Do Not Give Up After Failure:

They are willing to keep trying and trying until they succeed. They don’t view failure as a reason to quit. Instead, they use failure as an opportunity to grow and improve.

14. Don’t Fear Alone Time:

Mentally strong people aren’t afraid to be alone with their thoughts.  They enjoy their own company. And they aren’t dependent on others to entertain them and make them feel happy all the time. They can use downtime to be productive.

15. Don’t Feel the World Owes You Anything:

Most people like to think that if we put in enough hard work on something, then we deserve people’s respect and success. Mentally strong people aren’t born with a mentality that others would take care of them. They don’t feel that the world should give them something. Instead, they look for opportunities based on their own merits. Waiting for the world to give you what you think you deserve isn’t a productive life strategy it’s procrastinating.

16. Have Patience To Become Mentally Strong:

Whether they are working on time taking like improving their health or trying to do something from the scratch, mentally strong people don’t expect immediate results. They invest their time in hard work. Think of your efforts as a long race, not a sprint. View bumps in the road as minor setbacks rather than as total roadblocks.

They understand that real change takes time.

17. Enjoy Being What You Are:

Being Yourself

Mentally strong people enjoy the time they spend alone. They are confident about what they are. They don’t depend on others to cheer them up or uplift their mood. They can be happy with others, and they can also be happy alone.

18. Don’t Listen To The Wrong People:

While everyone has freedom of speech. Anyone can share his or her opinion, this doesn’t mean that you should listen to that person. Your possibilities may be impossibilities to some people, because everyone has their own perception. They see the world through an entirely different perception.

You cannot control everything that comes your way, but you are in absolute control of how you react to everything that comes your way. what happen to you is important but not as important as your response. Incredible process can happen in your life when you take control of your reactions.
